Most of the job happens before any concrete arrives
A driveway fails from underneath. Strip the topsoil, get the grade right, compact the sub-base in lifts rather than one pass, and set the reinforcement properly, and you have a slab that will outlive the truck parked on it. Skip any of that and the finish will not save it — you will see settlement cracks in the first couple of rainy seasons no matter how good the surface looked on day one.
That prep changes depending on where you are. Alachua County clay expands and contracts with moisture, so the slab has to be able to span that movement. The deep sand out in Gilchrist County drains beautifully but has no cohesion, so it needs real compaction in lifts. Same word, two different jobs.
Thickness, reinforcement and joints
A residential driveway carrying cars and a pickup is a different build than one that has to take a loaded trailer, an RV, or a delivery truck turning around on it. We ask what is actually going to drive on it — including the once-a-year things — and spec thickness and reinforcement from that answer, not from a default.
Control joints get cut on a plan, not wherever it is convenient. Their spacing is a function of slab thickness, and their job is to give the concrete a weak line to crack along so it does not choose one across the middle of your approach. A driveway with no joints, or with joints cut too far apart, is a driveway that cracks randomly.
Finishes and the road tie-in
A light broom finish is the default and it is the right answer for most driveways: it gives you grip when the slab is wet, it wears evenly, and it does not show every tire mark. From there you can go decorative — exposed aggregate, a stamped border, an integral color, or a full stamped surface.
The apron where the driveway meets the road is where a lot of otherwise-good driveways come apart, because that is the joint that takes the hardest hit from every vehicle that crosses it. We tool the edges and build the tie-in as part of the job rather than as an afterthought.
