Gainesville is our busiest city by volume and it splits cleanly in two. Alachua County soil is a clay-and-sand mix that behaves nothing like the pure sand out west of us. Clay expands when it takes on water and shrinks when it dries, and a slab poured on unprepared clay will crack on that cycle no matter how good the finish is. We compact the sub-base properly and reinforce with rebar so the slab spans the movement instead of following it.
