Pouring a Concrete Slab for a Shed or Addition in Gainesville
I pour shed and addition slabs in Gainesville. Here is how I prep the ground, handle our sandy soil and rain, and build a slab that holds up.
A good slab starts long before the concrete truck shows up. The prep, the grade, and how we handle Gainesville's sandy soil and rain matter more than the pour itself. Get those right and you have a flat, solid base that won't crack or shift. Get them wrong and no amount of good concrete fixes it.
Here's how I approach a slab for a shed or a room addition around Gainesville, and what I look at before I ever quote a job.
What kind of slab do you actually need?
It depends on what's going on top of it. A slab for a garden shed is a different animal than a slab for a room addition or a workshop with heavy equipment.
A shed slab usually just needs to carry the building and whatever you store in it. An addition slab has to tie into your house, support walls and a roof, and hold up over time without moving separately from the existing structure. Those are two different builds.
When I come out, the first thing I ask is what's sitting on it now and what might sit on it later. If you're thinking about a car, a lift, or heavy shelving down the road, I'd rather build for that now than watch you tear it out in a few years.
Why does the ground prep matter so much here?
Because our soil doesn't do us any favors. A lot of the Gainesville area sits on sandy, well-draining soil, which sounds nice until you realize sand shifts and washes out if it isn't compacted and contained right.
Before any concrete goes down, I strip the topsoil and organic material out. That black, root-filled dirt holds water and settles, and you never want a slab sitting on it. Then I bring the pad up with a proper base and compact it in lifts so it doesn't sink after the fact.
Grade is the other half of it. Around here we get heavy summer rain and the occasional storm that dumps water fast. If your slab isn't pitched to move water away from it and away from your house, you'll have puddling and, on an addition, water working toward your foundation. I set the grade so water runs off, not toward the building.
What goes into the pour itself?
Once the pad is prepped and formed, the slab gets built in a sequence. I set the forms to the finished height and check them for level and square before anything else.
Reinforcement goes in next. Depending on the job, that's rebar, wire mesh, or a combination, tied and chaired up off the ground so it actually sits inside the concrete instead of on the dirt where it does nothing. For an addition tying into your house, I pay close attention to how the new slab connects to the existing structure so they work together.
Then we place the concrete, screed it flat, float it, and finish it. For a shed or utility slab I usually put a broom finish on it for traction. I also cut control joints so the slab cracks where I want it to, in a straight line, instead of wandering across the middle of your floor. Concrete moves. Control joints just give it a place to do it.
What about the weather?
Weather runs the schedule more than anything on a concrete job in North Florida. Heat and humidity change how fast the surface sets up, and a pop-up thunderstorm can wreck a fresh finish if you're not watching the radar.
I plan pours around the forecast. In the hot months that often means getting the concrete down earlier in the day so the surface isn't flashing off before we can finish it clean. After the pour, I keep it protected while it cures, because concrete gains its strength over days, not hours, and rushing that stage is how you end up with a weak, dusty surface.
If we get a stretch of afternoon storms, I'd rather wait a day than pour into a mess. A slab you're going to live with for decades is worth getting the timing right.
What drives the cost of a slab?
The honest answer is that no two slabs price the same, and the size in square feet is only part of it. What really moves the number is the prep.
Here's what I'm looking at when I walk your property:
- How much dirt has to come out and whether we can get equipment to the spot
- How level the site is now and how much base we need to bring in
- The thickness and the reinforcement the slab calls for
- Whether it's a standalone shed pad or an addition that ties into the house
- Access, meaning can a truck reach the pour or do we have to move concrete by hand
- Drainage and grading work to keep water moving away
A slab tucked behind a fence in a tight backyard off NW 8th Avenue is a different job than an open pad on an easy-access lot, even at the same size. Can you match an existing slab or driveway?
Sometimes, and sometimes not, and I'll tell you straight either way. New concrete never perfectly matches old concrete in color because the old surface has weathered and the new mix hasn't. On a slab that'll be inside a shed or under an addition it usually doesn't matter. On visible flatwork it can.
